Program Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security and Emergency Management is designed to prepare students to manage emergencies, threats, and crises. This cross-disciplinary program integrates principles of emergency management, homeland security, risk assessment, business, leadership, and crisis communication, emphasizing theoretical knowledge and practical skills while incorporating a Christian worldview.
Given Carson-Newman’s mission for students to become “educated citizens and worldwide servant-leaders,” this degree will enable students to develop an understanding and appreciation of global developments within our own country and throughout the world, think critically, and act decisively as leaders in their professions and communities.
As the only undergraduate degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management in Tennessee and one of the few institutions offering this program from a Christian worldview nationwide, our Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security and Emergency Management is comprised of the following curriculum:
Homeland Security and Emergency Management Core (27 Credits):

What can you expect from your Homeland Security and Emergency Management degree?
- Understand and apply the phases of emergency management and the role each of them plays in managing and mitigating a disaster.
- Examine and analyze the growing threats and needs of homeland security and emergency management and its effect on public and private organizations.
- Demonstrate understanding of the legal environment as it relates to homeland security and emergency management.
- Work and lead as Christian servants within the homeland security and emergency management environment.
- Demonstrate the ability to plan, coordinate, and respond utilizing homeland security and emergency management measures at the local, state, and federal level.
